Henry James, (born April 15, 1843, New York, New York, U.S.—died February 28, 1916, London, England), American novelist and, as a naturalized English citizen from 1915, a great figure in the transatlantic culture. His fundamental theme was the innocence and exuberance of the New World in clash with the corruption and wisdom of the Old, as illustrated in such works as Daisy Miller (1879), The Portrait of a Lady (1881), The Bostonians (1886), and The Ambassadors (1903).He is best known for his novels dealing with the social and marital interplay between émigré Americans, English people, and continental Europeans. Examples of such novels include The Portrait of a Lady, The Ambassadors, and The Wings of the Dove. His later works were increasingly experimental. In describing the internal states of mind and social dynamics of his characters, James often made use of a style in which ambiguous or contradictory motives and impressions were overlaid or juxtaposed in the discussion of a characters psyche. For their unique ambiguity, as well as for other aspects of their composition, his late works have been compared to impressionist painting. The lists below can be found on this app that give some his main works:A Little Tour in FranceA Little Tour of FranceA London Life, and Other TalesA Passionate PilgrimA Small Boy and OthersAn International EpisodeConfidenceDaisy Miller A StudyEmbarrassmentsEnglish HoursFour MeetingsGeorginas ReasonsGlassesGreville FaneHawthorneIn the CageItalian HoursLouisa PallantMadame De MauvesNona VincentNotes of a Son and BrotherNotes on Novelists, with Some Other NotesPandoraPartial PortraitsPicture and TextRoderick HudsonSir Dominick FerrandSome Short Stories [by Henry James]The Altar of the DeadThe AmbassadorsThe AmericanThe Aspern PapersThe Author of BeltraffioThe Awkward AgeThe Beast in the JungleThe BirthplaceThe Bostonians, Vol. I (of II)The Bostonians, Vol. II (of II)The ChaperonThe Coxon FundThe Death of the LionThe Diary of a Man of FiftyThe EuropeansThe Figure in the CarpetThe Finer GrainThe Golden Bowl — CompleteThe Ivory TowerThe Jolly CornerThe Lesson of the MasterThe Letters of Henry James (Vol. I)The Letters of Henry James, (Vol. II)The Madonna of the FutureThe MarriagesThe Middle YearsThe OutcryThe PatagoniaThe Path Of DutyThe Pension BeaurepasThe Point of ViewThe Portrait of a Lady — Volume 1The Portrait of a Lady — Volume 2The Princess Casamassima A NovelThe PupilThe Real Thing and Other TalesThe ReverberatorThe Sacred FountThe Sense of the PastThe Spoils of PoyntonThe Tragic MuseThe Turn of the ScrewThe Two Magics The Turn of the Screw, Covering EndThe Wings of the Dove, Volume 1 of 2The Wings of the Dove, Volume IIViews and ReviewsWashington SquareWhat Maisie KnewWithin the Rim, and Other Essays, 1914-15Credits :All of the books under the terms of the Project Gutenberg License [www.gutenberg.org].
